In this five-fortnightly art skill foundation course, essential watercolour painting techniques and artmaking concepts will be covered to kick-start your journey in watercolour.

Whether you’re a complete beginner or looking to revisit or refine your watercolour painting skills, this short course will provide you with professional advice and a solid foundation to build upon.

The first half of each class will focus on foundational exercises and techniques while the second half will be dedicated to developing a take-home painting. All artist-grade materials will be provided by the facilitator; participants are welcome to use their own set.

Class #1: we will start by familiarising beginners with the basic tools, materials and techniques for watercolour painting. Learners will first practise wetness control by applying and reducing the amount of water, followed by preparing paint puddles with the right consistencies. A small-scale colour bleeds painting in simple composition will be created with these prerequisites in watercolour painting.

Class #2: Basic brushstrokes and blending techniques will be this session’s foci which will lend themselves to many desirable watercolour effects. Simple colour bleeds and blending exercises will be practised to experience the fundamental moves in painting with watercolour which will then be applied to make a small-scale painting in simple composition.

Class #3: a split-colour wheel will be introduced for learners to better understand the watercolour palette and colour mixing skills. Layering of washes thus glazing techniques will also be practised to produce a simple small-scaled painting designed to solidify what has been covered so far.

Class #4: Understanding the basic steps in creating a solid piece of watercolour painting will be introduced. Layering of washes, lifting and masking will then be practised to appreciate the versatile nature of painting using watercolour on proper surfaces. Marking lightly with pencil, planning for thin/thick wash applications and edge designs will be the emphasis of this lesson.

Class #5: traditional and contemporary examples of successful watercolour painting examples will be presented for learners to appreciate this accessible, popular yet technically challenging painting medium. Softening, splashing, texturing and surface preparation will be introduced and applied to a take-home piece that shows the progress the learners made in this short foundation skill course.
