‘The Shifting Heart’ is a classic in Australian theatre up there with Ray Lawler’s ‘Summer of the Seventeenth Doll’. It speaks to heart of the ever changing multi-cultural landscape that is fabric of contemporary Sydney. ’The Shifting Heart’ is a story of marriage between two cultures which also exposes the racism that is experienced as a result of this marrage. It is a drama from Australia's past representing the difficulty that migrants marrying out of their culture background experience, a story which continues to ring true for migrants today. The universal theme of a persecuted minority is shown in the sufferings of an immigrant family settling in a resentful suburb. Although the play is set in Melbourne’s Collingwood, the tragic journey of a young teenager working for his Aussie brother-in-law and trying to fit in to a new culture away from the care and control of his parents and sister resonates in Sydney as well. Liverpool Performing Arts Ensemble s excited to bring to the Powerhouse Theatre their production of Richard Beynon’s ‘The Shifting Heart’
