In this mixed media and paint school program, young children will be supported to explore and delve into different artmaking techniques to create 2-dimensional art pieces that tell unique stories.
Jo Wong Hoyee has years of experience guiding artmakers of all ages and abilities to develop person-centred projects as a visual art educator and creative arts therapist. Jo specialises in drawing, painting, illustration, photography, printmaking and installation and regularly practises artmaking in freehand, tech-aided, pigment-based and on-screen formats.
Lesson #1
Using simple and complex shape cutouts, learners are guided to trace their selection on their A3 paper to make simple compositions. Coloured papers, markers and paints will then be used to colour the marked areas. Examples of abstract art and cartoon characters from the modern art period will be shown to help with understanding basic visual art terms.
Lesson #2
Shading with pencils of various qualities thus visual effect. Drawing techniques will be introduced as the foundations of many forms of art. Examples from cave paintings to contemporary works will be selected to initiate meaningful discussions.
Lesson #3
Handle watercolour paint medium with confidence. How to prepare, use and clean water-based painting mediums will be introduced to the learners who will use mostly watercolour and acrylic paints for the rest of the program. Prime examples of water-based painting mediums from across the world throughout history will be used to show the full potential of the medium – and their users!
Lesson #4
Learners will be guided to draw simple/complicated shapes with various dark lines followed by filling in the delineated areas with marks of various colours, patterns, torn papers etc. Examples from pop art and comic strips will be shown.
Lesson #5
Expressive painting and collage will be the focus of this action-filled lesson when learners will be aided to make their own printed design which will then be cut and paste into forming an image of their choice. Textile art will be used as examples this time.
Lesson #6
Mixing a range of colours using the 3 primary colours plus black and white will be introduced and practised by the young learners. Essential art concepts such as tonal value and colour theory will also be explained. The paints will then be applied to a drawing made earlier in the lesson when famous paintings from the modern art era will be shown as inspiration.
Lessons #7-8
Applying what has been explored in previous lessons, learners will be encouraged to develop their own meaningful projects. They will be guided to make sound decisions in subject matter selection, content choices and materials applications – all towards telling a story that they want to communicate with others. A range of modern art examples will be used to inspire learners with diverse interests.
