Stitching Mythologies
with Tyrone Te Waa (Artist in Studio Residency)
Join us for a creative workshop where you will enter the worlds of Indigenous storytellers and then be guided through drawing and sewing activities to reflect on the stories told.
This workshop will be led by Tyrone Te Waa, Casula Powerhouse’s artist in studio residency. Tyrone is an artist who works predominantly with found materials including fabric, wood, and paint. He has described his practice as “an act of knowledge weaving” as he brings materials and stories to life through his hands.
Indigenous storytelling is the basis for this creative workshop, including both past and present-day mythologies told by Tyrone and local First Nations storytellers, poets, and artists. This workshop will enable you to learn fundamental creative processes by using the stories as a departure point for the drawing and sewing activities.
This will be a laid-back but fun and creative workshop. Light refreshments will be provided. On arrival, you will be provided with your own sewing kit and all of the drawing and crafting materials you need to bring stories to life!
Ages under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
The workshops will be broken into four sections:
PART 1 – Story Time
After a short intro, everyone gets a notepad and pen in preparation of the stories. Participants will be asked to take notes, list key words, and draw images while the stories are being told.
PART 2 – Draft Design Drawing
Everyone will collectively recall the stories and Tyrone will provide quick sketches based on important words and to inspire the group.
PART 3 – Stitching The Story Together
Participants will turn sketches into textile works. Tyrone will provide advice and suggestions to help you realise your ideas.
PART 4 – Reflections
Everyone will discuss the underlining meanings of each story and how they may apply to everyday life.
