In this mysterious and raucous feature debut by Panah Panahi, a chaotic family sets off on a road trip that will change their lives forever. Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, 2021.

Bickering, singing along to Iranian pop tunes from a distant era, worrying about their ill dog: this family of four drives to an unknown destination. The father is in the back seat with a broken leg that should have healed some time ago. The mother veers between laughter and tears. The younger son is a ball of energy, but the older brother is mostly silent. As the journey progresses it becomes clear that this is no ordinary road trip; it is one beset with paranoia, but also moments of transcendence. Taking inspiration from familiar tropes of Iranian cinema – both Abbas Kiarostami and Jafar Panahi have made seminal films set largely in cars – Panah Panahi, the son of Jafar, has staked a promising path wholly of his own.

“Thrillingly inventive, satisfyingly textured and infused with warmth and humanity, this is a triumph.” – Wendy Ide, Screen Daily

“A stirring new voice.” – Jordan Mintzer, The Hollywood Reporter
