Bolude, the daughter of a Nigerian diplomat, and Carmen, a self-made vigilante, share a deep sisterhood but struggle with their identities in the face of American identity politics. Bolude, engaged to an Australian named Tommy, is forced to confront her Nigerian heritage when her father demands she follow tradition by getting 100 Australians from 100 villages to welcome her before he'll approve the marriage.
As the two women travel to Australia, Bolude tries to reconnect with her Nigerian roots to fulfill the demand, but this causes a rift with Carmen, who begins exploring her own Australian heritage. The journey forces them to examine their diverging paths and identities—leading Bolude to question how to balance her Nigerian community, her life with Tommy, and her friendship with Carmen.
Can Bolude find the answers to harmonise living in Australia with Tommy, serving her community in Nigeria, and keeping Carmen in the family?
