On that day too, Hermia must reply to her father Egeus’ death threatening demand that she must marry Demetrius – who he favours, rather than Lysander – who she loves. Hermia and Lysander decide to meet in the nearby woods and escape the Athenian law. Within the wood, Theseus’ supernatural counterpart Oberon – the King of the Fairies, and Titania – his Queen, are quarrelling over the command of a little Changeling boy. Oberon enlist Puck, his mischievous servant, to assist his revenge. Meanwhile, Lysander and Hermia have escaped into the forest where they are pursued by Demetrius, and also Helena – his heartbroken ex. Also in the forest are a group of tradies who are rehearsing a play for the Wedding Day. Strange and funny things start happening. And so it goes …

ABOUT THE PLAY:
Arguably Shakespeare’s most popular play, and definitely one of his funniest and most accessible, A Midsummer Night’s Dream is about love, in all its forms. It’s a world where royals, young lovers, the fairy kingdom, and a troupe of amateur actors all intersect. Spells are cast, feelings are transformed, and true love wins out in the end. The play’s themes are timeless and universal, and the insights and laughs are delivered in equal measure. It’s as soulful as it is hilarious.
ABOUT THE DIRECTOR:
Rowan is a veteran professional director and Artistic Director, who has led companies including ATYP and Theatre North, and has directed everywhere from the Queensland Theatre Company and the Edinburgh Festival to the Old Fitz and the Perth Fringe.
ABOUT THE PRODUCTION:
This exciting and accessible production is set in a sophisticated city in the 1980s. The supernatural world of the fairy kingdom is ruled by a tempestuous couple Fairy King who look like Rock Gods. The young lovers are headstrong post-adolescents, and the tradespeople-turned-actors are a timeless and hilarious ensemble. The production features vibrant retro costumes and a whimsical Fairyland setting, spectacular lighting, magic and illusion, and a soundtrack of classic ‘80s hits. Running at around 90 minutes, this is a Dream for everyone. It will delight lovers of the Bard while also serving as a perfect introduction to his work. You’ll laugh. You’ll sigh. You’ll be enchanted.
